Nyasha Derera stands as one of Zimbabwe’s most powerful voices for disability inclusion — a globally sought-after transformational keynote speaker, elite athlete, and a dedicated advocate for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). His journey began in adversity, but through extraordinary resilience, discipline, and self-belief, he rose to international recognition, inspiring audiences at institutions such as the London School of Economics, the Brookings Institute, SENIA International, the United Nations, and the FISU World University Games. A decorated multi-distance runner, Nyasha has earned 24 international medals — 17 of them gold — and was honoured as a Legend by the African Union Sports Council Region 5 in 2025.
Nyasha’s commitment to community transformation is reflected in every part of his life. Having taught himself English and overcome systemic exclusion, he now uses his voice and platform to empower the voiceless across the world. He has served in global leadership roles within Special Olympics, including Sargent Shriver Global Messenger, Chair of the Global Athlete Congress, Board Member, and Global Health Messenger. At home, he works as a coach, technical official, Lions Club member, and mentor with Restless Development. His story is a testament to what is possible when talent is nurtured, when dignity is upheld, and when every person is given the chance to thrive.
